In cases of mastectomies with removal of the nipple, breast reconstruction includes as a final stage the creation of an artificial nipple complex - nipple halo.
Application/Action
Once the patient and surgeon are satisfied with the breast reconstruction and the healing stage has progressed, you may consider proceeding with nipple and areola (the dark "circle" of skin that normally surrounds the nipple) reconstruction. The nipple that results from the repair will of course not look like a normal nipple. It will not react to changes in temperature or touch. It will also not have sensation. However, it will offer a "three-dimensional nipple" image. The techniques used in nipple and areola restoration vary. Most use small local flaps that are folded in a specific way to create a lump that closely resembles the opposite nipple (see Figure). Rarely, it may be necessary to use grafts, either from the opposite normal nipple (if it is of sufficient size) or from other areas of the body with relatively dark skin. Several women complement the 3D nipple reconstruction with a beautiful 3D tattoo that fully and colorfully mimics the appearance of the nipple and areola. This tattoo is done by specialized artists and/or physicians. Although it tends to fade in 40% of cases and therefore needs to be repeated after some years, its results are impressive and it is a final "touch" that gives the restoration a special image of "near perfection".
Return to everyday life
The postoperative course is relatively painless. Some changes and follow-up in the clinic follow. The use of a special brace is necessary for about a month and the patient can return to her daily routine after 10-15 days. Skin sensitivity is gradually restored, in most cases within 3-6 months.
